This art box introduces kids to a prolific African American painter of the 20th century: Delilah Pierce. Throughout her career, she experimented with several different styles but was best known for her fluid style, which ranged from figurative to abstract. Her colorful compositions are inspired by nature, female equality, and her travels to Europe and Africa. As an African American, she was also a tireless advocate for civil rights.
Children will begin this box by learning about Pierce’s early life, her career as a teacher, and her passion for art. They’ll also study four of her most famous pieces. Then it’s time to get creative! Young artists will use a variety of exciting materials like sand, clay, rope, and much more. They’ll jump into a multi-sensory experience as they mix up their own impasto paste and use it to create textured art. Each project they create will focus on Pierce’s signature style, but they’ll always have the chance to follow their own imaginations, too
