Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo is considered one of Mexicos' greatest artists! Although she was mostly active during the early 1900s, her popularity is still growing today. In this month's My Artist Box, kids will have the opportunity to discover this bold artist and see how art can be used to communicate powerful emotions.

The box begins with a biography and an explanation of a few events that dramatically shaped Kahlo's life. After that, it's time to start creating! Each project includes a wide variety of art supplies like watercolors, clay, metallic sheets, impasto paste, and glitter. Kids will study two of Kahlo's paintings and be encouraged to use their imagination as they create their own artwork. They'll also get a step-by-step lesson in painting self-portraits. The box wraps up with a 3D recreation of Kahlo's home: La Casa Azul (The Blue House).

Activities in the Frida Kahlo Box:
Self-Portrait with Bonito Shadowbox
This project takes the concept of a shadowbox and uses it to create a 3D portrait of Frida Kahlo. Kids will play with lots of color in this piece: green leaves, a neon-colored border, colorful flowers, and a stoic watercolor painting of the artist.

Self-Portrait with Bonito Shadowbox
Congress of People for Peace Reproduction
Two unique finishes take center stage in this piece: a metallic foil sheet and a textured paste made from tissue paper, glue, and water. The end result is a strikingly textured tree against a smooth watercolor background. A sun, a moon, and glittery fruits add even more visual interest!

Portrait Painting Technique
It's Frida Kahlo's most famous style: self-portraits. In this project, kids will get a step-by-step lesson in drawing faces. They'll also use a white crayon to create a paint-resist background for their self-portrait. The final addition of tissue paper flowers gives a special nod to Frida Kahlo.
