Shitao

Discover a Chinese artist with an independent spirit and bold ideas in this month's My Artist Box! Shitao (1642-1707) created calligraphy, poetry, and paintings that challenged people to reconsider what beauty truly meant in Chinese art.

As kids learn about Shitao’s ideas and techniques, they'll recreate two of his most famous pieces. They'll practice watercolor skills and printmaking. They'll also use a straw, pompoms, and a pipette to experiment with inkblots. Plus, there are lots of engaging materials in this art box like bleeding tissue paper, a rice paper scroll, and deckled-edge paper. Throughout the box, kids will develop an appreciation for Chinese art and create their own modern-day masterpieces!

Inkblots and Seal Stamp Techniques
The red squares on Shitao's paintings are a unique point of interest in Chinese art: seal stamps. In the first technique lesson, kids will engrave a piece of foam as they create their own seals. In the second lesson, they'll learn about Shitao's "ugly" inkblots that weren't really ugly at all!
