Robert Duncanson

Robert Duncanson was one of the first African American artists to experience great success in the United States and abroad. In the mid-1800s, he was known as "the greatest landscape painter in the West."

Young artists will begin this box by reading about Duncanson's life and a few of his most famous pieces. Then they'll put their imagination to work as they recreate two of his landscape paintings. These pieces highlight the peaceful beauty of nature so they'll learn how to blot watercolors, create gradients, and utilize perspective. They'll also get a comprehensive lesson in light and shadow techniques using pencil and paint. The final project gives kids a chance to create a 3D waterfall with a rocky foreground.
